As a small business owner preparing to design your first business website or upgrading a current one; you should consider making it search engine friendly. If a visitor finds it difficult to access or navigate your website, then the chances of you surviving online are slim to none.
There are some things to consider with this process, so we’ve written this article to help you understand why going mobile is so important. Here are four things you should know about SEO friendly web design.
It Needs to be Responsive
High rankings are important for small businesses, especially local ones. One way of doing well in mobile search is to make your website mobile responsive. According to the findings of Bright Local, over 50% of business traffic is mobile-based. Half of those people end up visiting a store for their intended purchase within a few days. Moreover, a whopping 70% of mobile searches end up converting to transactions within an hour of the search.
If business success is important to you and you want those searches to convert to sales, you must have a mobile-friendly website design implemented to ensure productive searches occur. If your site is mobile optimized, it can be accessed by smartphones, tablets, and laptops. This results in better service and happier transactions for all involved.
You Must Optimize Your Images
If you use images anywhere within your website, it is important to optimize them. This has an affect on your SEO. By optimizing images, you can rename an image file to include a relevant keyword or phrase. Moreover, optimized images are easily viewed in Google’s image search.
It is not a difficult to do. Rename your image with the keywords by changing the file name to something that describes your service; for example, acme-plumbing-services-city-state.jpg, or whatever it is that works in your particular case. Use HTML for inserting the image into the correct placement on the web page.
As always, a word of Caution, DO NOT stuff keywords in the file name. You do not want to be labeled a spammer by Google so make it as natural sounding as possible.
Search Engines Love Text
Search engines can crawl on all types of media, but the written text has always been the best form for optimization purposes. Text must be on every page of your website. It does not need to be cramped or just a wall of text, but it must be present. Consider having 400 words or more per page for optimization success. The 50-60 character SEO title and 150-160 character meta description on each page are just as important as the content. Even if you only intend to post videos or audio on specific pages, include a description or something.
If you operate a locate business, do not make the mistake of making your NAP (name, address, phone) information an image. Many companies make this mistake. The Google bot can only recognize text. Therefore, keep necessary mapping information in text form. Finally, incorporate relevant keywords and text in URLs.
Build Clean Text-Based Navigation Structure
Another SEO-friendly design strategy is to make sure your website has a clear hierarchy and text links. This means that each page should have an access link on at least one entirely different web page. Depending on the needs and design of your website, this could just include a navigation area, or it could involve a system of categories and subcategories with various pages within the layout.
